Why Psychological Safety Matters as Much as Calories in HA

Most people have either experienced this themselves or know someone who has:

A period goes missing during a stressful time (maybe after losing a loved one, going through a breakup, or navigating an intense job). That’s not random. It’s your body being smart.

It’s Not Just About Calories

In the HA space, we talk a lot about food and for good reason. Eating enough is a huge part of recovery. But there’s another piece that often gets missed: Your body doesn’t just respond to how much you’re eating. It responds to how safe you feel. You can be doing “everything right” nutritionally, but if your body still feels stressed, it may not be ready to bring your cycle back.

Your Brain Is Always Assessing Safety

At the center of this is the hypothalamus. Its job is simple: keep you alive and protected. And one of the ways it does that is by constantly asking: “Is now a safe time to have a baby?” That question isn’t just answered by food. It’s influenced by your environment, your thoughts, your stress levels, and how you’re feeling day to day.

Stress Isn’t Just Physical

We tend to think of stress as things like:

  • Undereating

  • Over-exercising

But psychological stress counts too.

Things like:

  • Constant pressure to do more

  • Feeling like you can’t switch off

  • Worrying about body changes

  • Needing to stay in control

Your body doesn’t separate these neatly. To your brain, stress is stress.

A Simple Way to Think About It

Have you ever watched a really intense movie and felt your heart racing or your body tense up? Logically, you know you’re safe. But your body still reacts. That’s because your brain responds to what it perceives, not just what’s actually happening. The same thing can happen in HA recovery. Even if there’s enough food coming in, your body might still feel like it’s under pressure.

What This Means for Your Clients

This is especially important for clients who are:

  • Perfectionists

  • Very driven or high-achieving

  • Used to being “on” all the time

  • Uncomfortable with rest

They might increase calories, but still feel stressed about:

  • Eating more

  • Changing their routine

  • Gaining weight

  • Slowing down

And if that stress is still there, the body can stay stuck.

Why Coaching Matters So Much Here

This is where coaching goes beyond just a nutrition plan.

You’re helping clients:

  • Let go of rigid rules

  • Feel okay resting

  • Reduce pressure on themselves

  • Build trust with their body

And often, it’s this shift—not just the food—that helps their cycle come back.

The Takeaway

For HA recovery, your client’s body needs two clear signals:

  • There is enough energy coming in

  • I am safe

Both matter. And if one is missing, progress can stall.
